I should have known that I had set the expectations too high for Middle Cyclone, the new album by Neko Case. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s very good. It’s just not as good as Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. That’s okay though, as Fox Confessor was one of my favorite albums in I don’t know how long. I lost count long ago how many times I’ve listened to it. It was the only CD in my car for months. So, in light of that, Middle Cyclone is doing very well indeed simply by not frustrating me. Still, I did have this foolish hope that she would rise to the level of ‘almost perfect album’ again. Alas, it was not to be, and very good was all I got. I feel spoiled.

I read quite a bit about Grigori Perelman this summer, and all the articles I read gave me an idea for a story, which I wrote. I was quite pleased with the result, and was starting to polish it before sending it out. There’s just one problem though. The main character takes a picture of himself every morning, which, while not wholly original, was not, I thought, totally cliche.

Little did I know, and how did I miss this, that there was a guy named Noah who had taken his picture every day for six years. He then made a video, which he put on youtube. And now I have to decide if he didn’t trump my story with his five minute video. He and I both use the idea of these pictures very differently, but I can’t help but feel that the story would forever be in the shadow of that video.

Today, I clicked on a link from Crooked Timber regarding a video I had already scene on YouTube. It was this music video in which the creator effectively samples himself playing two instruments badly, only to piece them together to make them good. It’s nice, and obviously showed a great deal of creativity. The one Crooked Timber links is this one though, which is a repost of the same video, by someone who is not the author, with a little logo now imposed. This doesn’t really create any problems for the original creator, Lasse Gjertsen, as he is still credited at the end of the video, and by the poster of the video. Still, one wonders why the second guy did it, as the video was already on YouTube… I’d say I have better things to do with my life, but I’m posting about it at 2 A.M., so I have no room to talk.

The letter writing went well today. I wrote letters to two old friends that I had largely lost contact with. Each of them got a couple of pages and a Muppet stamp, thank you U.S. Postal Service. My handwriting in printed letters has already improved. I might soon try some cursive. It felt good to write things out by hand again. I have always liked writing by hand over writing on a computer, as it slows me down. I think I create sentences that are less likely to be bloated crap. That may just be me romanticizing it though. When I first tried writing a novel, I wrote large portions of it out by hand. What stopped me was when I had to start moving it into a digital form for editing. In the end I decided that it just wasn’t worth it.

The other day YouTube helped me find a band. Several years ago I had seen a video while bored and watching MTV2. I didn’t catch the band id at the end though. All I heard was that the band was from Canada. For years I thought there was some Canadian band out there that I would just love, if I could remember who they were. I think my memories might have inflated my love of the song. A few weeks ago I looked up all the bands that had members who spent time with Broken Social Scene. Then I went to YouTube and started looking at the videos for these bands. I found it, Elevator Love Letter by Stars:

Powered by WPvideo 0.60

StarsElevatorLoveLetter –

It’s not as good as I remember, not bad, but not the Canadian revelation I had dreamed of. I wish they’d stayed a myth. It’s always nice to think that there is another band out there just waiting for you to go nuts.
